Construction workers in New York work in one of the most physically demanding industries. They put their safety and even lives on the line for the sake of their jobs, so it’s not surprising that they have a higher risk of injury. Eye injuries can occur; these are the most common suffered in construction work.

Corneal scratches

The construction site typically consists of a dirt floor, and workers have to do their jobs in a variety of weather conditions. Dirt, dust and other debris often fly around; if a construction worker lacks protective goggles and debris gets into their eyes, it can lead to a corneal scratch. This type of eye injury isn’t as serious as some others and often resolves on its own.

Hyphema is a type of eye injury that can occur after a construction accident. A worker can suffer this injury while using tools and an object accidentally gets into their eye. It causes bleeding to occur between the cornea and the iris and causes pain or discomfort. Bleeding in the eye looks scary and should be checked by a doctor.

Orbital bone fracture

Construction workers can suffer fractured orbital bones when they suffer an accident and something strikes them in that area of the face. This injury is painful and often involves swelling and bruising. Medical attention is needed for this type of eye injury.

Chemical burns

Construction workers often have to work with dangerous chemicals, so if an accident occurs and a worker isn’t wearing protective goggles, they could suffer chemical burns to the eyes. This is a medical emergency that should be addressed immediately as it could lead to blindness.

Eye injuries are nothing to take lightly. Your vision is precious, so don’t hesitate to seek medical attention.
