Spinal injuries and their long-term consequences

The spinal cord is an integral part of the nervous system. It runs through the back body of an individual and is contained in the spinal column. The spinal cord transmits information from the brain to the rest of the body so that it can move, react and fully function.

When a New York resident suffers an injury to their spinal cord they can experience a range of symptoms and conditions. If the injury is minor and will heal over time they may have to cope with pain and some changes to motor function. Serious spinal cord injuries are classified as complete and incomplete and that designation may influence what level of paralysis the individual suffers.

An incomplete spinal cord injury is one in which the victim retains some sensation and ability to move below the site of their injury. When a victim suffers a spinal cord injury and has no sensation below the site of their harm, then their injury is classified as complete and they may experience paralysis. Paralysis high in the spinal cord may result in tetraplegia, while a low spinal cord injury may cause paraplegia.

Damage to the spinal cord can be permanent and may result in long-term consequences for the victim. They may be unable to maintain their work responsibilities and may struggle to care for their dependents. When spinal cord injuries are caused by the negligence of others, victims may have options. Personal injury litigation may give them the means of securing compensation for their losses and moving on with their lives after their accidents.
