Use proper lifting technique at work

Depending on your profession, you may be required to lift heavy items every now and again (or every day). While you don’t see anything wrong with this, you should never lose sight that heavy lifting can result in a serious injury.

This is why using proper lifting technique at all times is critical. If you don’t know how to lift safely, an injury to your back and/or neck could be the end result.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Always start in a safe position, such as by bending at your knees (squatting) as opposed to kneeling
  • Use your legs to lift, not your back
  • Avoiding twisting as you lift the item and/or transport it
  • Never attempt to lift an item that is too heavy for you to handle on your own

While these may be basic tips, workers often forget about them when lifting a heavy item.

If you suffer an injury when lifting you’ll immediately know that something is wrong. For example, you may experience a shooting pain through your back or neck. Or maybe you hear something pop, accompanied by immediate discomfort.

In the event of an injury, set the item down, stay where you are and call for help. You shouldn’t attempt to walk it off, as this can result in more damage.

Once you receive initial treatment, you can work with your medical team to decide on the best recovery schedule.

If you’re unable to return to work, learn more about your legal rights. You may be able to file a claim for workers’ compensation, which allows you to receive money until you can return to your job.
