East Harlem crane fall injures 3 construction workers

Despite the large number of high-rise buildings here in New York City, not all serious construction accidents occur at high altitudes. Case in point is an accident that sent three construction workers to Harlem Hospital on June 25. One of them was reported to be in critical condition. Another was described as suffering nonlife-threatening, but nonetheless serious, injuries. The third reportedly suffered minor injuries.

According to a spokesman for the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), the workers were injured when a mini crane fell four stories and struck them. New York's Department of Buildings (DOB) reported that the Jekko mini crane was being used to install a curtain wall when it rolled over, falling to the street.

According to the DOB, the site where the accident occurred is located at 149 E. 125th St. The 11-story site is reportedly being developed as a mixed use building to eventually include commercial space, apartments and a community facility.

A DOB spokeswoman says that the department is still investigating the cause of the accident. She indicated that the DOB may that something about the building may be at fault.

When construction accidents occur, any number of factors, companies and individuals may have some fault. Investigations by local, state and federal agencies are important in helping victims and surviving family members determine who can be held legally responsible as they seek compensation for medical costs, lost wages and other damages. However, it's wise to have guidance and support from a New York attorney to help ensure that your rights are protected and that you receive the compensation, including worker's compensation benefits, that you need and deserve as you move forward.
