SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY BENEFIT CHANGES

If you are on Social Security Disability benefits or are about to file for Social Security Disability benefits because you are disabled, and too disabled for all but a minimum of gainful employment, you need to know that the Social Security Administration will be making changes for the coming year.

Those who are disabled and on Social Security Disability benefits will receive an increase in benefits in the form of a two-percent cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA.

Being able to work does not bar you from receiving Social Security Disability benefits. It depends how much you are able to earn. In the coming year, there will be a rise in maximum you can earn and still be eligible for benefits (called Substantial Gainful Work Activity, or SGA). In 2018, you can earn up to $1,180.00, or, for the blind, $1,970.00.

The rules and case law often changes; we will update you throughout the year as significant changes are announced.
