I read this article in the Daily News with a sense of terrible grief and outrage. New York is one of the great cities of the world, and construction is booming, yet we still cannot provide a safe workplace to the men and women who helping to move our city into the future. This is a disgrace.
In the rush to profit, companies are not providing enough safety training in construction and demolition, and in scaffold rigging and assembly, and not providing enough safety equipment on construction and demolition sites, to insure that their workers who are rigging, climbing and standing on scaffolding and ladders are absolutely safe and protected. Accidents in elevator shafts, accidents in construction and demolition holes, on roofs that collapse–these are all preventable if only those employers who don’t care are forced to care by way of proper laws, regulations, oversight, and severe punishments for carelessness and negligence.
People must always come first ahead of profit. Safety first, so that more families aren’t torn apart by death or disability.
